Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Senior Hurling Championship
A County Final place was on offer when we clashed with De La Salle last Saturday evening in Walsh Park in the County Semi-Final. Six minutes elapsed when De La Salle opened the scoring with a point. Young Stephen Roche got Sion into the game as he struck the ball over the bar. De La Salle replied with Martin O’Neill pointing Sion into the lead and Austin Gleeson collecting a quick free from the ageless Tony Browne to give Sion a two point cushion. De La Salle didn’t sit back and got themselves on level terms with two quick points. O’Neill was in the action again with De La Salle putting themselves one point up. But a magnificent run through from Michael Gaffney from the middle of the pitch and he rattled the back of the Cleaboy side’s net! Sion were given a boost as the sides withdrew for half time. Sion led by two points. The game was level just after the break with De La Salle capitalising on the frees they were awarded. O’Neill had Sion just a point ahead but De La Salle hit Sion for four unanswered points two from frees. Ken McGrath signalled Sion’s intent to not give up with a point. A ball floated in around the De La Salle square, broke to substitute Anthony Kirwan who slotted the ball past Brenner in the goal and pulled Sion one point into the lead. John Mullane had his team back in front with a long range effort followed by a free. O’Neill and the opposition both traded scores. In the final minutes of play De La Salle pushed on with three unanswered scores to book themselves a place in the final. Final score Cnoc Síon 2-8 to De La Salle 0-18. Hard luck lads, ye showed great determination over the hours hurling and through the year, when everything wasn’t going our way. Thanks to all the panel and Jimmy and his backroom team for their efforts.Under 16 Semi-Final
Our Under 16s travelled to John Mitchell’s last Sunday morning to take on Dungarvan in the Semi-Final of the Championship. It was a fairly wet and windy morning. Dungarvan posed their intentions from the off with a couple of well taken scores. Mount Sion found their range with an accurately placed pass from Ferdia to Cian O’Regan to open Sion’s account. Evan Curran also rose a white flag along with Eric Hoban and another O’Regan point. However, Dungarvan ran out convincing winners in the end. Hard luck, ye made great progress over the championship with some great wins against all odds. We look forward to seeing ye move on to Minor level in the coming years. Thanks to Eoin Fanning, Pat Kelly and David Thornton for all their work through-out the year.
