Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Under 21
The eagerly awaited Under 21 Championship Quarter Final took place in Mount Sion last Saturday afternoon against old rivals Ballygunner. Each half had its own winner with Mount Sion taking the first half with a storm and cruising into a six points to one lead after twelve minutes, mainly through the stick of Martin O’Neill (5) and Austin Gleeson (1). Sion’s dominance continued in the opening half with Stephen O’Neill finding Gleeson who drove over. Ballygunner responded each time from the placed ball. The Gunners only managed to score one point from play in the opening period. Sion added six more scores via Niall O’Sullivan, Stephen Roche, O’Neill and Gleeson. Sion had a five point advantage going in at half time.
A minute in and Sion were awarded a twenty one yard free. With goal only on O’Neill’s mind he rattled the net with a shot that made the net dance. Ballygunner replied with two points before they hit back with a goal of their own. A clearance up the line from Craig Sauvage to Galgey resulted in another point for the Monastery. O’Neill hit two more frees and again the Gunners replied. Turning point of the game came when Stephen Roche was sent to the line with eleven minutes remaining on the clock. Martin F. O’Neill was gifted a great one on one chance with the Ballygunner keeper, but a wonderful save boosted the Gunners. Up the pitch they came and in around the six yard line a ball fell into the path of a Ballygunner forward and he made no mistake about it, sending the ball into the net. Teams were level with just five minutes sitting on the clock. Ballygunner fired over four more points but Gleeson pulled on a last gasp effort on the edge of the box. It sailed over and Sion exit the championship. Final score Cnoc Sion 1-16 to 2-16. Hard luck lads, great effort, with a bit of luck we could have been the victors. Thanks to Nicholas, Seamus, Fionn and Darren for their efforts over the past month.Under 9s
The Under 9s travelled to Kilmacud Crokes in Dublin for their annual tournament last Sunday. Our lads always prepare well for these big tournaments and there was no difference for this one. In our group games we accounted for Kilmacud, Thurles Óg and were narrowly beaten by Dicksboro. This ensured we qualified for the Sheild Semi-Final, where we beat UpperChurch from Tipperary and went on to beat Naomh Eanna from Wexford in the final on a scoreline of 1-1 to 0-1. Well done boys, another brilliant display. Pictures from the day will appear on the website in the coming days.Race Night
