Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Frankie Walsh (1936-2012)
On Friday December 28th 2012, Cnoc Síon again lost a Life President, a tremendous hurler, a great leader and loyal servant.Born in 1936 Frankie burst onto the Waterford scene during the 1956 Championship and was a regular on the team up until his retirement in the late sixties. During his distinguished career he won three Munster titles, a National League, five Railway Cup medals and the highlight of Frankie’s high profile career would undoubtedly be the honour of captaining Waterford to the 1959 All Ireland and receiving the cup on the steps of the then new Hogan Stand.
Back on the club stage, Frankie prospered from a young age and went on to win no more than thirteen County Senior Hurling Title and four County Senior Football titles, as well as a Minor Hurling Championship and a Harty Cup with the school.Frankie also gave great service to Cnoc Síon off the field of play training teams to County Championships as well as our first Munster Club Championship.
He served as Development Officer for a long number of years and his contribution in the Development of our facilities could not be understated. He was directly involved in everything we did over the last forty years or so.
Frankie is pre deceased by his late wife Eileen. To his sons John, Peter, Paul, Frank and Robert, his sister Mabel we offer our deepest sympathies. As a Club we have lost a man who is irreplaceable. He was all the things we said earlier but most of all he was our friend and friends like Frankie Walsh are unique.
