Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Senior Championship
Round one of the Senior Hurling Championship got under way last Friday evening against Ballygunner. Sion got off to a flying start, notching up a 9 points to 3 lead after fifteen minutes. Sion capitalising with some great scores from all around the pitch through Ian Galgey, Austin Gleeson, Stephen Roche, Michael Gaffney and Martin O’Neill. Sion’s defence were alert and ready and coped well with the lively Ballygunner attack. Three frees from Ballygunner’s scorer in chief Pauric Mahony were cancelled out with two Austin Gleeson frees and a Stephen Roche point. A great ball from Michael Gaffney to Ian Galgey down the wing ended in another score for Sion. Stephen Roche pointed to give Sion a double score margin of Cnoc Síon 0-14 to Ballygunner 0-7 for half time.
Ballygunner now with the aid of the breeze in the second half, opened the scoring with two points. Ian Galgey replied but Ballygunner again hit another two scores. Austin Gleeson pointed from a free and Martin F. O’Neill picked out Stephen Roche to slot the ball between the posts. Ballygunner shot another three scores in succession. Martin F. O’Neill had Sion’s best chance of a goal, but an excellent save from the Ballygunner goalie denied young O’Neill and sent the ball out over the end line. Martin O’Neill pointed from the resulting sixty five. Mahony and Gleeson traded scores as the game ran into injury time. Sion were three points ahead, the Gunners went in search of that ever important equalising goal. Credit must be paid to our defence through-out the night, tight and sticky, and they didn’t disappoint in the closing stages. A superb tackle from Senior debutant Peter Penkert to an oncoming forward, drove Sion on to finish out the game with still the three points to spare. Final score from Walsh Park, Cnoc Síon 0-20 to Baile Mhic Gonair 0-17. Well done lads, a great overall team performance and we look forward to next weekend against Abbeyside in Fraher Field on Saturday night at 7:30pm.
Under 14 Championship & Feile
Our Under 14s had a busy week. On Monday they opened their championship with an excellent performance against St. Patricks in the club. An opening goal from Aaron Healy set the expectation’s high with Sion running up a 2-8 to 0-2 score at half time. The second goal came from Jordan Halpin. In the second half we had another two goals to our name with Jordan grabbing his second and Jack Meaney rattling the net. It finished up Cnoc Síon 4-11 to St. Patricks 0-3.
On Wednesday evening it was Feile action we all had our eyes on. The Eastern Final against close rivals De La Salle. Sion hit an early lead through Evan McGrath and Edward Cullen both pointing. De La Salle goaled and hit two points. McGrath pulled a point back, to leave Sion trail by two points at half time.
In the early stages of the second half, De La Salle hit another 1-1 but Sion battled back with points from Louie Halligan and Johnny Flynn. Sion were bombarding the De La Salle goal, but great credit to their keeper, he pulled off some mighty fine saves. Two more McGrath points left Sion still in search of that goal but as time ran out we couldn’t break through the De La Salle defence. Final score from Walsh Park, Cnoc Síon 0-7 to De La Salle 2-4. Our lads couldn’t be faulted for their effort and with a bit of luck it could have swung our way. Hard luck lads.
The Championship is up and going now and will take place on Monday nights, with the exception of next Monday night. Round two sees us travel to Gracedieu to facedown De La Salle on Monday 13th May, throw in at 7:30pm. Hope to see you all up there. Best of luck.

We would like to wish Michael King a speedy recovery after an operation this week which kept him from togging out for last Friday night’s game. We look forward to seeing you back up and about training.
