Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Senior Championship
Round two of the Senior Hurling Championship saw us travel to Fraher Field to take on Abbeyside. Sion were ahead just forty seconds in with a point from minor Austin Gleeson. Abbeyside took every opportunity of the wind and sun in Sion’s eyes with a high ball finding its wall to the net just after two minutes. Stephen Roche replied with Abbeyside forcing a sixty-five and successfully converting. Sean Ryan’s run though the Abbeyside defence and an excellent hand-pass to Stephen Roche brought things level with a well taken goal. Martin F. O’Neill cross field ball into the path of Austin Gleeson, ended in another score. Two Abbeyside points on the trot was interrupted with Martin O’Neill firing over from the middle of the park. Ian Galgey and Gleeson both pointed, before Ian O’Regan was called upon to make an unstoppable save in the Sion goal. Points were traded with Abbeyside finishing out the half with three points in succession. The western club lead by two points at half time.
Sion now aided with the breeze were back on level terms with two points from Austin Gleeson after eight minutes. Every time the Monastery pointed, Abbeyside equal to the challenge pointed. Play was halted mid way through to the half as Ian Galgey was forced off due to injury. Once play resumed, Sion took the lead with Gleeson pointing followed by young Roche. Abbeyside pulled a point back but substitute Gavin Carroll raised a white flag along with Eoin McGrath to ensure Sion’s victory. Final score, Cnoc Síon 1-18 to Abbeyside 1-15. Well done lads, were two wins from two in this year’s championship. We have a break now until second weekend in June, where we will face Dungarvan in Walsh Park.
Intermediate Hurling Championship
Last Monday we faced Portlaw in the rescheduled game, which was due to a bereavement in the Portlaw club. Unfortunately, we narrowly lost out by one point on the day.
Our attention turned to Sunday afternoon for the second round of the Intermediate, when we faced St. Saviours in Dunhill. Ian Power opened the scoring with a free, Saviour’s responded in kind and shot themselves into the lead with two more points. But Richard Roche found the net for Sion on eight minutes. We didn’t have to wait long for the second goal when Robert Bresnan from well out the pitch shot straight into the top corner. Anthony Kirwan extended the lead with Ian Power also chipping in with another two points. It was the same man again, who finished to the net for the first of his two goals. Saviours hit another point, with Power goaling again with a great ground stroke. Saviours pointed three in a row before they were awarded a penalty. Pat Kelly saved on the line and the game was blown for half time. Sion led by eight points at half time.
Saviours hit the first score of the second half with a free. Sion newcomer Jordan Broaders pointed. Saviour’s responded again with a point, but Sion were quick to hit back and Aaron Coady pointed from long range. Michael Frisby was switched to free taking duty in the second half and struck three points midway through the half. Sion ran in another five points before the final whistle with Niall O’Sullivan, Bresnan, Frisby and Darren Finn all raising white flags. Final score, Cnoc Síon 4-14 to St. Saviours 0-13. Well done lads, we won’t be in action again for another few weeks.
Junior Hurling Championship
The Junior hurlers recorded their first win of the championship last Thursday evening in a very windy De La Salle Gracedieu. Sion opted to face into the breeze in the opening half and led by two points at the break on a score-line of 0-7 to 0-5. In the second half, Sion blitzed the De La Salle goal with point after point. With some great scores picked off by Jamie O’Meara, Evan Curran, Captain Bowe, Daniel Kelly and Clive Power. De La Salle failed to record any score in the second half. Sion ran out very comfortable winners in the end. Final score Cnoc Síon 0-20 to De La Salle 0-5. Well done lads. Next up is Ballygunner in Mount Sion in two weeks.
