Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Primary Game
Well done to Alan Kirwan who represented his school and club in the Primary game at half time in Waterford’s Munster Championship clash with Clare.Senior Hurling League
We made another away trip for the league, this time the shorter journey to Ballygunner. Michael Frisby hit the opening score of the game but Ballygunner were back on level terms within two minutes. Martin F. O’Neill, Gavin Carroll pointed but the home side hit three. Another O’Neill point this time from a free was followed up with Frisby and Carroll points. Ballygunner pointed from a sideline cut and followed up with two points from play. Frisby was yet again on target. Ballygunner were awarded a 21 yard free but corner back Craig Sauvage saved, but Ballygunner sent over another two points before the break. Captain Stafford converted a long range free to leave just the minimum between the sides.
Sion took the lead just after the break with Frisby, Robert Breslin and Stephen O’Neill getting in on the scoring. Two Ballygunner frees came but Gavin Carroll pointed and then produced a piece of magic with a fantastic volley to the net to send Sion four points clear. The Gunners true to their style pointed and grabbed a goal in the nineteenth minute of the second half. Michael Frisby finished off his scoring with his fifth of the night. The game was level but Richard Roche goaled to give Sion a three point cushion. A final point from the home side left too much for them to do. Final score Cnoc Síon 2-14 to Ballygunner 1-15. Well done lads. Another victory heading into next weekend’s championship clash with Dungarvan. This game will go ahead on Sunday with a 3:30pm throw in at Walsh Park. Best of luck lads.Under 14 Championship
Our Under 14s were in action twice this week. First up it was Championship with a journey to Dungarvan. Unbeaten in Championship so far, Sion wanted to keep up their winning ways and they did just that, with a fantastic 3-11 to 3-5 win.
Last Thursday evening the lads went to Ballygunner to play the Eastern Semi-Final. Ballygunner got the game underway with 1-1 but Sion battled back with two points from Evan McGrath and Louie Halligan. The home side pointed another free but Sion got in on the rest of the scoring with McGrath points three frees and Dean Fowler rattling the net. Sion led by three points at the break.
The home side got the first score of the second half. But again McGrath was accurate from frees. Louie Halligan broke through the defence to goal. Conor Quinn raised a white flag with McGrath finishing out the game with another point. Final score Cnoc Síon 2-9 to Clonea 2-4. Well done lads. Great performances again. Next up is a big challenge on Monday against Abbeyside. I’d ask all those who are around to pop up to the club and give them some support. Throw in at 7:30pm.Junior Championship
Round Five of the championship took place last Thursday evening against Clonea out in Clonea. Sion found themselves four behind after 5 minutes, but two Johnny Hayes points reduced that margin. Sion hit two more points from Ned Power and Daniel Kelly but Clonea ran out another four points to lead by 0-4 to 1-5 at half time. Now facing into the breeze, Sion hit the opening score through Johnny Hayes, Clonea pointed again but Pappy Bowe responded and Daniel Kelly hit the net. Clonea went three in front with another brace of points. But Kelly levelled things up with another goal. Sion found themselves again three behind with three unanswered scores from the home side. But credit to the battling performance of the Monastery men, a Bowe and two Hayes points levelled things up with injury time now the only time remaining. Clonea pointed but it was Jamie O’Meara who had the final say as he kept calm and coolly pointed from a free to leave things all square. Final score: Cnoc Síon 2-10 to Clonea 1-13. We are in championship action again this coming week. This time we face Passage in Passage. Day TBC. Keep an eye on the website for more information.Under 11 City League
