Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Senior Hurling Championship
Last year’s County Finalists Dungarvan provided the opposition for round three of the Championship last Sunday in Walsh Park. It was Mount Sion that got the scoring underway with midfield partners Eoin McGrath and Kenny Stafford pointing in the early minutes. Dungarvan struck their first score with Stephen O’Neill perfectly dissecting the posts from long range. Dungarvan took advantage of the poor Sion shooting and shot themselves back into the game with four unanswered scores. Martin O’Neill opened his personal account and quickly added a second in the 23rd minute. A long range free from Austin Gleeson broke in around the Dungarvan square and off the head of Sean Ryan and into the goal! Dungarvan got a late on point as Sion went in a point up at the break.
Both sides exchanged scores from the dead ball and Dungarvan took the lead on the 12th minute. The introduction of Gavin Carroll paid dividends with the aforementioned pointing on the 17th minute. Dungarvan began to impose their dominance on the game and took the lead once again. Michael Gaffney pointed but the Old Boro side went two in front. Sion pulled one back and again the western club pulled ahead. But true to Sion fashion, and never give up attitude, Sion hit five points on the trot through Martin O’Neill (3), Stephen Roche and Austin Gleeson to pull themselves three points ahead and record their third win in a row in Championship. A brilliant come back as many thought the game had slipped away from us. Final score Cnoc Síon 1-16 to Dungarvan 0-16. We will now have a break until Waterford exit the Inter-County Championship.Intermediate Hurling Championship
Round three of the Championship saw Cnoc Síon face Dunhill in Walsh Park last Saturday afternoon. Sion got off to a shaky start conceding a goal in the first minute. Sion got back into the game with Niall O’Sullivan pointing and then Jordan Broaders shooting from a tight angle to the net. Dunhill hit two points but Dermot O’Byrne got his name on the score sheet with a point. Another three points from Dunhill put them in the driving seat. But Richard Roche and Anthony Kirwan both knocked over scores. A turning point in the game came in the 21st minute as both sides were reduced to 14 men. Sion hit two more points and were awarded a penalty. Up came keeper Shane Forristal to rattle the net and send Sion one goal ahead as both sides retired for half time.
Ian Power had the Monastery four points clear just a minute into the second half. Three points unanswered cut the margin to one point, Power made that two with another successful free. Again Dunhill responded but Power supplied an answered from the dead ball. An accurate puck-out to Richard Roche, who motored on up the pitch and passed to Niall O’Sullivan, who supplied the finish. Another Power score was all that was needed as Dunhill pointed but Sion held on to win by a one point margin. Final score Cnoc Síon 2-12 to Dunhill 1-14. Well done lads, great victory.Junior Hurling Championship
Our Juniors travelled to Passage for round six of the championship, to take on the table leaders. Sion having lost to the same side in the opening round had a lot to prove. Passage hit the opening score but it was the Monastery outfit that took control early on with some great scores picked off by Jamie O’Meara and Johnny Hayes. Midway into the first half, the youngest of the Power clan, Bryan was stretchered off after picking up an injury. Ricky Freeman and Evan Sheridan hit two more scores for Sion with Passage replying. Hayes, O’Meara, Ruairi Sheridan and Daniel Kelly combined to give Sion a comfortable 0-11 to 0-6 lead at half time.
It was the Villagers who had a better start to the second half. Striking three frees and a point from play within the first fifteen minutes. Captain Bowe proved his worth and scored a magnificent point. O’Meara followed and pointed a free. Passage hit two more points but O’Meara goaled from a long range free to put Sion four points clear. Sion conceded a penalty late on but the Sion keeper was equal to the shot and cleared up field. Again Hayes pointed and claimed his fourth score of the night. Final score Cnoc Síon 1-14 to Passage 0-13. Well done lads and we all would like to wish Bryan (Ned) Power a speedy recovery. Next up is Roanmore next week. Date of game TBC.
