Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Under 14 Championship
The Under 14 rescheduled Championship Semi-Final took place last Monday evening in John Mitchells against championship favourites Abbeyside. Our lads hit the ground running and Timishi pointed within the first minute of the start. Evan McGrath followed with a point and Timishi grabbed his second. Jack Meaney pointed from the sideline before Abbeyside opened their account with a point and a goal. Sion were afforded several goal chances in a row but were denied by poor shooting and just some bad luck. Abbeyside pointed again but McGrath continued his excellent free-taking. Johnny Flynn struck over the shoulder to dissect the posts and send Sion two points clear. Conor Quinn’s long range effort ended in another score for Sion, Abbeyside replied but Sion were two points up at half time with the help of an Evan McGrath pointed free just before the break.
Sion were five points clear with a well taken goal from Evan McGrath but one minute later Abbeyside replied and the game was back in the melting pot. A point followed for the western side. Sion missed a penalty as Abbeyside drew level with a point. Two McGrath points were again cancelled out as Abbeyside pulled ahead with nothing left on the clock, but Sion were back when Abbeyside fouled and McGrath duly accepted the pressure as he pointed. The game was sent to extra time, with five minutes each half.
Sion were rocked in the first period with Abbeyside scoring their only score via a goal. Sion battled on and the game was called for a quick change around. Sion grabbed a point late on from Johnny Flynn and were awarded a free in, 25 metres out. The ball whizzed just over the bar as time ran out and Sion exit the championship after what was a brilliant showcase of underage talent in the county. Hold your heads high lads, with a bit of luck on the night who knows what could have happened. We still have the Eastern Championship to look forward to. Well done lads.
Intermediate Championship
Our Intermediate Hurlers played round four of the championship against Clonea in Walsh Park last Sunday afternoon. Sion had a poor opening half as Clonea ran in 1-7 to 0-2 after 15 minutes of the game. Sion settled down and picked off scores from Niall O’Sullivan, Michael Frisby, Jordan Broaders, Dermot O’Byrne and Sion’s best player on the day Anthony Kirwan who notched up 1-6 over the hours hurling. Sion trailed at half time by 10 points.
Sion now had the strong breeze at their backs. Clonea hit the first two scores of the half. Dermot O’Byrne hit his second point with Michael Frisby running through the middle and passing to Kirwan to finish to the net. Clonea pointed and Coady, Kirwan and Roche combined to cut the deficit. Play was halted for several minutes to allow an injured Clonea player leave the field of play. Clonea hit the next three points. Sion missed a double goal chance with substitute Hayes and O’Sullivan both missing. Scorer in chief Kirwan pointed over the shoulder as Frisby pointed from the dead ball. Midfielder O’Sullivan and Hayes both made up for their earlier misses and pointed. Clonea ran out another two points as Coady ended the game with a point. Final score, Cnoc Síon 2-17 to Clonea 1-26. A poor start to the game gave us too much to do. Next up is Erins Own in a must win game to gain a place in the knockout stages. This game will take place on 27th July.
Junior Hurling Championship
The Junior Hurlers recorded an emphatic win over near neighbours De La Salle last Thursday night in the Championship. Sion ran up a 1-11 to 0-1 score at half time with the Sion goal coming from Evan Sheridan. The Sion scoring continued after the break with Sion hitting 2-10 to 0-2 in the second half. Sion rattling the net from youngster Cian O’Regan and Evan Sheridan. A good performance by us which ended Cnoc Síon 3-21 to De La Salle 0-3. Well done lads, next up is Ballygunner in two weeks time.
