Following a number of cancellations the long awaited Eastern Under 16 final was finally played on Saturday last on a very heavy Walsh Park pitch after the previous day’s torrential rain, both sides found it hard to adjust to the underfoot conditions with De La Salle having the better of the opening and were first off the mark raising the green flag, they then tested the Sion defence with only a number of brilliant saves from young Eoin Browne keeping them at bay before Evan McGrath was first off the mark for the Monastery men with a well taken point from play, following this four points from Johnny Flynn saw Sion going into the break just two points down on a score of 0-5 to 1-4.Even though the opposition were first off the mark in the second half Sion battled away with some great work from James Ogundare down the right ending up with Edward Cullen putting the ball in the back of the net to make it a one point game, unfortunately De La Salle responded well with another goal and even though Sion battled well with Johnny Flynn accurate on free taking duties they were just unable to claw back the difference and the opposition got two fortunate goals near the end to finish the game on a scoreline of 4-09 to 1-09, tough luck lads the scoreline didn’t reflect the performance on the day.
