Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
Paddy “Moremiles” Murphy
Last week saw the departure to their eternal rewards of two great clubmen, Michael Dowling in Killarney and Paddy ‘Moremiles’ Murphy.Few people were better known throughout Waterford than Paddy ‘Moremiles’ Murphy who passed away last week. A man of many parts Paddy was well known as a Fianna Fail activist for most of his life and as a popular rep for Moremiles Tyres on Mayors Walk, hence the second part of his title which he fairly gloried in. A great character was Paddy and we in Mount Sion will remember him as such but much more as a staunch clubman and supporter of many years standing. Paddy was an ever present in Mount Sion serving on the club executive committee for over twenty years and also in the position of club registrar. Paddy seldom missed a Mount Sion match or even a training session and was always great company in the club centre after games. He would defend Mount Sion to the last in any company and for many years organised the club mass for deceased members. He also retained a great affinity with the school, the Christian Brothers and the Edmond Rice Centre Paddy was a great Gaeilgoir, a fluent Irish speaker and a lover of all things Irish. He served as Oifigeach Gaeilge on the Waterford County Board for a three year term. The club members were proud to provide a guard of honour in the company of his colleagues in Fianna Fail at his removal to St. Pauls Church on Tuesday last and his burial in Ballygunner, Paddy’s family would like to thank all the club members who took part in the guard of honour with a special mention to club secretary Owen Sauvage who did all the organising, Paddy’s months mind mass takes place in St Pauls on April 11th at 6pm and all are welcome to attend.
Michael Dowling
The death of Michael Dowling in Killarney was very poignant in that he was the last surviving link with the Mount Sion team that won the club’s first senior hurling championship in 1938. Michael, who passed away peacefully in Killarney, was in his 102nd year and was a member of the Mount Sion club since its earliest days. He served the club as a player, officer and committee member for many years before his work saw him transferred to Killarney in the forties. Michael retained a keen interest in the club’s fortunes for all of his long life and was kept up to date by his great friend and former colleague Pat Fanning when they met on Michael’s visits to Waterford and Pat’s to Killarney for big games. Michael maintained his involvement with GAA affairs in Killarney and was very involved in the development of Fitzgerald stadium as a prominent committee member. When the club won its 28th County title in 1988, the 50th anniversary of the 1938 victory Michael Dowling was proud to enjoy the dual celebrations in the club with many of his former colleagues who have now predeceased him. He always retained his club and Deise Draw membership and his family link with Mount Sion was maintained through the Walsh family of Bernard Place with his nephews Paddy and Johnny with Paddy captaining the club to a 16th minor hurling title in 1963 and Johnny playing wing back on the senior winning side against Dunhill in 1972. Michael’s great nephew Walter Mulcahy maintains the family tradition in the club.Sargent Cup Final 2014
