Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
Minor Hurling
Our Minors started their campaign in atrocious conditions on Monday night last against Clan na Gael in the club, senior player Mikey Daykin was the focus of attention in the first half as his accuracy from pointed frees kept Sion in the hunt after the visitors scored a couple of fortunate goals to stay in the lead and he was also instrumental in setting up Johnny Flynn just before the break to put the score at 1-08 to 3-04 in the county club’s favour. In the second half the monastery men roared out of the blocks with Evan McGrath and Daykin raising the green flag with the impressive Flynn and Ben Flanagan chipping in with points but the visitors never gave in and just nosed the game 4-11 to 3-13 winning by the single point, a lot of positives can be taken from this game such as the work rate of the young players and the fact they scored 3-13 in such bad conditions which should auger well for the rest of the Championship.Junior Hurling
The unbeaten Juniors faced old rivals Ballygunner in Poleberry on Friday night hoping to keep that run going, Sion were slow out of the blocks before Ian Power converted from a free to put our first point on the board, it was to be Bomb’s last meaningful input into the game as he was forced to leave the pitch a few minutes later due to injury, more pointed frees in a flat first half from captain Aaron Dempsey kept the scoreboard at half time 0-4 to 0-8 in Ballygunner’s favour. Sion got to within a point in the second half with the long runs from young Kaylem Kennedy causing trouble in the opposing defence and the experienced back line holding firm before a controversial goal in the closing minutes put Ballygunner out of reach to leave the final score at 2-17 to 0-11 and the unbeaten run in tatters, tough luck lads there’s two games in the next two weeks to hopefully get things back on track.Juvenile Hurling
The Under 11’s had a good win against Tramore on Monday night while the Under 14’s proved too strong for Clan Na Gael in Butlerstown on Wednesday night with the Under 12’s just unlucky to lose out by a single goal to Clonea on Friday, this week the Under 13’s have two games on Wednesday and Saturday, keep an eye on the website and social media for updates on fixtures etc.Poc Fada
Well done to Owen Sauvage who despite picking up a shoulder injury on Thursday night went on to represent club and county on Saturday in the Munster Puc Fada in the Glen of Aherlow, Savo acquitted himself well on the day with a score of 35 pucks which was just two short of the winning score of 33 and he’s already looking to next year and improving on that score.Speedy Recovery
Speedy recovery to Ferdia Mac Aodghain who is recovering from illness at the moment, Ferdia is an integral part of many of our teams and we’re looking forward to seeing him back on the pitch soon.Munster Final
