Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
Senior Hurling
Following a long break due to the County team getting to the All Ireland semi final the Seniors resumed their campaign against Passage in Kill in round 4 of the Championship knowing that a defeat would see them not getting through to the knockout stages for the first time in years, the first half was a tight encounter with Martin F O Neill getting Sion’s first score after Passage had opened their account, captain on the night Eoin McGrath set the tone for the team with his tenacious running and tackling never letting the men from the fishing village settle on the ball and with points coming from McGrath , Tony Browne, Sean Ryan and Martin F O Neill on dazzling form leading the attack Sion went into the break trailing by the minimun 0-12 to 0-11. Sion were straight out of the blocks in the second half with Martin F getting two points in the first minute of play to take the lead, a dubious decision followed after the umpire had raised the flag to signal a Sean Ryan point which was then overturned by the referee, not to be rattled young Evan Curran calmly slotted over a few minutes later to give Sion a two point lead, Passage then took a hold on the game notching points before they raised the green flag after Iggy had made a fine save only to be beaten from the rebound, Sion’s heads never dropped and when O Neill received the ball and ran at the Passage defence this was one Fish they were never going to catch and the only thing that ended up in their net was the sliotar as he buried it to put the game level once more. In a thrilling final ten minutes the game could have gone any way with Passage protesting that the ball had gone over the line and Sean Ryan’s last minute effort just falling short before the ref blew the whistle signalling a drawn game 1-18 each. This result means Sion are depending on a win in their final game against Lismore to stay involved after the group stages and can surely build on this positive performance.Tony Forristal Tournament
It was another busy day in the club as the Tony Forristal was hosted once again, well done to everyone who helped in the organisation and in having the club grounds looking so well as usual and well done to Cork who were the overall winners, full results can be seen on the Tony Forristal Facebook page and the Waterford GAA website.Under 10 Blitz
The Under 10’s were invited to O’Loughlin Gaels Kilkenny for a 4 team blitz on Saturday afternoon last . First up for Mount Sion was Na Fianna from Dublin where the lads played some fantastic hurling showing maturity beyond their years passing the ball around field and winning out on a scoreline of 4-6 to 0-2 . Next game was against a very strong Borrisoleigh team which was a very physically tough game, again some great hurling from both sides with Sion losing out narrowly on a scoreline of 3-3 to 2-3 . The last game was against hosts O’Loughlin Gaels where the lads again played great hurling finding each other around the field and working very hard winning out on a scoreline of 4-9 to 0-0 . Some great performances on the day from Lee Flanagan in particular with a beautiful sideline over the bar , Dylan Ryan, Davin Marshall and Cormac Dunphy . The panel on the day was Davin Marshall, Lee Flanagan, Cormac Dunphy, Jack Cowman, Jack Barrett, Jake Marks, Killian Dundan, Alex Walsh, Jared O Keeffe, Adam Regan, Adam Cummins, Ben Hennessy, Emmanuel Adebayo, Ross Byrne and Dylan Ryan.
