Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
Dick Culleton
The death of Dick Culleton last weekend at the venerable age of ninety two saw another link broken with the golden era of the club from the forties into the sixties. Dick was a Mount Sion man all of his life and contributed to the club and county in every capacity as a player, selector, committee man and referee. Dick won the first of his two senior hurling medals in 1945 but it was as a footballer that he really made his mark playing centre back on the club’s first Senior Football title win over Brickey Rangers in 1953 and as goalkeeper on the winning sides of 1956, 1959 and 1961.Dick served as a county Senior Football selector in all grades and was a selector on the Waterford team that beat Kerry in the Munster semi – final in Walsh Park in 1957. He served as a referee for some time and his love of the GAA saw him always available in a voluntary capacity as a gateman and steward at Walsh Park or any venue.
Dick was a proud Mount Sion man who retained his connection with the club right up to his death last weekend. To his wife Eily, his children John and Mary, grandchildren, nephews and nieces and extended family we extend our sincerest sympathy.
Under 14’s
The Under 14’s must be our busiest team this year as they are still competing in all the county competitions as well as travelling to Donegal to represent their county in the Feile, last Monday night saw them take on De La Salle in the club in the Eastern semi final and the lads put in a fine performance from shot stopper Josh Fanning on goal all the way up to two goal man Ben Frisby and free taker P.J. Fanning giving them a comfortable win on a scoreline of 4-13 to 1-07, this now sets up an Eastern final on Monday night against Clonea in Walsh Park and also in a busy week they play Brickeys in the County Final in Walsh Park on Saturday at 2-15pm.Under 9 Tournament
Our Under 9’s were invited to play in the James Stephens tournament on Saturday last. In the opening game of the group we beat the first of Ballygunner’s two teams by 4 points and then faced the home team James Stephens in an extremely close physical game which we lost by 2 points to qualify us for the Shield final. We faced Ballygunner’s other team in the final producing our best hurling with some brilliant performances from Adam Regan, Dylan Ryan and Emmanuell Adebayo running out winners on a scoreline of 5-03 to 2-04 . The panel for the day was Dylan Ryan, Adam Regan, Alex Walsh, Jared O Keeffe, Ross Byrne, Sean Reilly, Ben Hennessy, Sam Byrne, Mark O’Connor, Jack Kirwan, Emmanuell Adebayo ,Tommy Walsh, Evan Flanagan and Taigh Corcoran.
