Mount Sion GAA Club Notes
Parade
Our Juvenile club once more marched in the parade on St Patricks Day and proudly represented their families and their club wearing the blue and white of the club, thanks to all our young players and to the coaches who did a great job of marshalling them on the day!
Sean Hayden
Sean Hayden R.I.P.
The sad departure of Sean Hayden last week saw the final Mount Sion link with the great Waterford All Ireland Minor Hurling winning side of 1948 broken. Six Mount Sion boys played on that team, namely Martin (Wattie) Morrissey, Sean Hayden, Tom Gallagher, Joe Conlon, Mick Flannelly and Joe Flannelly and all went on to achieve senior success with the club in the following years.
Born and reared in Luke Wadding street, part of Sion’s hurling heartland, Sean Hayden was an outstanding minor hurler, playing at fullback in that All Ireland final and fulfilled all of his promise when going on to win eight Senior Hurling championships between 1949 and 1958 as well as three Senior Football championships. Between 1952 and 1955 Sean was a regular at wing back on Waterford senior teams for league and championship. He retired from club and county hurling having achieved much in 1958 as he settled with his family in Tramore. He remains a part of Mount Sion’s hurling history.
Sean was laid to rest in Dunhill on Friday last.
To his daughter Fionnuala, son John, his grandchildren, brothers Philip and Billy and the extended Hayden family is extended the sympathy of all in Mount Sion GAA. Thanks for the memories Sean.
