Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Senior Championship
Round five of the Senior Hurling Championship took place last Sunday afternoon in perfect conditions. Sion had the board ticking with just over a minute gone on the clock with Owen Whelan signalling our intent from early on and driving over from the middle of the pitch. Martin O’Neill took advantage of the early fouling by the Roanmore defence and had Sion well in the lead with fifteen minutes gone. A pass from Tony Browne to Stephen Roche resulted in another score for Sion. However midway through the half Roanmore began to come into the game and hit Sion for four unanswered points. Sion responded with Martin O’Neill, whose deflected shot sent the Sky Blue’s keeper the wrong way and pushed Sion five ahead with four minutes left before the break. Both sides finished out the half by trading scores with each other, with Sion’s Stephen Roche getting the pick of these from underneath the stand on the City End. Sion’s cushion at half time was still five points.
After the break Roanmore had the deficit back to three but again Martin O’Neill pointed and Ian O’Regan was forced to make a save and the ball was cleared by John Dee. Austin Gleeson pointed and Roanmore pulled two back. Eoin McGrath pushed Sion on with another point and again Roanmore reeled in the Monastery with two points. But Sion’s star forward Martin O’Neill had Sion two ahead with Roanmore responding with a single point this time. In the last five minutes, the game had begun to turn back in Sion’s favour with Sean Ryan, O’Neill (2), Gleeson (2), all finding their range. Sion booked their place in a quarter final with the old rivals Ballygunner. This will be played in two weeks time, weekend of the 15th/16th. Well done lads. Final score Cnoc Síon 1-19 to Roanmore 0-15.Tony Forristal
The weather really does come out for the Tony Forristal weekend and this could not be a truer statement with last Saturday’s fine weather. Waterford were in action in our pitch and had a great run which saw them qualify for the Final after accounting for Laois and Cork in the group stages and Wexford in the semi-final. This set up a clash with our neighbours across the Suir River, Kilkenny. Our lads gave it their all fair dues to Kilkenny as they ran out winners 1-5 to 1-12. Our own Ben Flanagan was a member of the panel and he did us all proud! Nothing but excellent comments were passed on the condition of our pitches. I must pay tribute to Philly Flynn, Peter Roche, Davy Carroll and Anthony Kirwan who have the pitch in tip top condition not just for this weekend but all year round. Take a bow! Pictures from the Finals and Waterford games in Mount Sion are up on our website. Full scores from the days action are also available on the website!Last Man Standing
