Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Minor Hurling Championship
Our Minor campaign finally got off to a start when we faced St. Carthages on a very wet Wednesday evening in Mount Sion. Evan Curran had Sion a point ahead just after two minutes of play. Both sides exchanged early points but it was the visitors who struck green with a goal on the thirteenth minute. Another goal followed two minutes later with a top scorer shot unstoppable for young Power in the Sion goal. Carthages hit several more point to have a flattering 2-6 to 0-4 lead at half time.
Austin Gleeson pointed from a free after fifty seconds. Another two points followed both from frees. Both sides were reduced to fourteen men in the eight minute of the second half. It was time for the Sion comeback and we certainly weren’t disappointed. Mikey Daykin goaled and reduced the deficit. Further points from Curran from the dead ball brought Sion back level and then two points ahead with time now in injury time. St. Carthages pointed one last time as the game finished up, Cnoc Síon 1-14 to St. Carthages 2-9. Well done lads, great start to the minor, next up is De La Salle on Tuesday 13th August in Mount Sion at 7:30pm.Intermediate Hurling Championship
The final round of the championship took place last Thursday night in Cleaboy against City side Erins Own. Sion had a poor start and found themselves down 5 points after fifteen minutes without recording a score on the board. Dermot O’Byrne opened Sion’s account with a point just on the fifteenth minute but that was cancelled out by an Erins Own free. Ian Power and Shane Forristal both hit Sion frees but again our opposition cancelled these out with two frees. Young Jordan Broaders made up for his earlier miss and pointed, followed closely by Michael Frisby who also raised a white flag. Aaron Coady pointed just before the break to leave three points between the sides.
Sion now playing against the strong breeze hit the first score through Ian Power from a free. Erins Own free-taker also found his range. But Sion’s patch of dominance began with the excellent Niall O’Sullivan making a penetrating run through the middle and pointing over the bar. Richard Roche and Johnny Hayes pointed. The only goal of the game came in the 13th minute with Richard Roche producing a flick at the edge of the square, beating the keeper and sending three points clear. Sion didn’t look back and Michael Frisby finished out the game with three more points from frees, but Erins Own hit two more points just at the death. Well done lads, good comeback and a place in the Quarter Finals is now confirmed against De La Salle on Saturday 24th August. Final score Cnoc Síon 1-13 to Erins Own 0-12.
