Mount Sion Club Notes
Under 21
The 2008 successful minor team have progressed in their quest for an Under 21 title after a tough game against Dunhill/Fenor, where extra time was necessary to separate the two teams. John Dee made quite an impression in his first championship game for the monastery, where he commanded the half back line. Captain Owen Whelan while injured chipped in for a number of scores. To Dunhill/Fenor’s credit they put in a great display and will have a lot of players underage for next year’s championship and in my opinion and will be a force to reckon with. Final score Mt Sion 1-19 to Dunhill/Fenor 1-18. They now face Passage in the Eastern Semi-Final. No fixture is available but keep an eye on the facebook page and website for more details.
Senior League
A renewal of rivalry for the first time this year was the first senior league game of the season against Ballygunner. Both sides were without a number of notable players, who are away with the Waterford Senior team in their preparation for the last League game next week against Galway.
From the off, both teams went point for point. Sion finally took the lead after 10 minutes. A first half goal from Martin O’Neill and points from Ken McGrath, both Martin O’Neills, Michael Frisby, Ross O’Keeffe and Stephen Roche gave Sion a comfortable lead going in at half time. After the break Ballygunner didn’t wait long to strike and scored 2-5 in the opening 15 minutes. A brilliant solo and strike by Ross O’Keeffe finished to the Ballygunner net. The movement of Kenny Stafford from the heart of the defence to centre forward may have been an unusual move by it paid dividends as he stuck over 3 points to finish the game out and leave the score 2-16 to 2-11. Next week we play Dungarvan at home on Sunday at 7pm.
Under 16
The Under 16s suffered a defeat to the hands of Ballygunner last Monday night in the Eastern Semi-Final. Ballygunner went in as clear favourites to this very young Mount Sion side and proved the tag was appropriate. Austin Gleeson opened the scoring for the Monastery with a point from play but it was the Gunners who dominated the opening exchanges scoring 2-2 but Sion only trailed at half time by the minimum margin.
The second half saw Sion face into a stiff breeze but the home side set the early pace and with a new look and relatively inexperienced defence, the Mount Sion lads were under real pressure. Ballygunner used the wind to their advantage and finished the game out to book themselves a place in the Eastern Final. Final score Mount Sion 4-3 to Ballygunner 5-14
The next fixture is against Lismore on Monday the 11th of April at 7pm in Mount Sion Keep an eye on website for details of other games.
Under 11
Our Under 11s first game of 2011 was against Roanmore where the lads put in a great display to come out winners. Well done and keep up the great effort. Final score Mount Sion 3-5 to Roanmore 3-4. Next week it is the turn of the Under 12s. They play Ballygunner in Mount Sion at 6:30pm on Friday night.
