Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Senior Championship
With full points from our first two championship games against Roanmore and Passage, we travelled to Fraher Field on Sunday last to take on Tallow in search of a third victory and a definite Quarter-Final place. When these sides met last year Tallow overwhelmed Sion in the opening half and gave Sion too much to do in the second half to narrowly beat the Monastery side by 1 point. Sion raced into an early lead through points from Martin O’Neill and Ross O’Keeffe. Tallow opened their account with 3 unanswered points. Eoin McGrath and Owen Whelan added points moments later. Tallow tagged on a few points but Owen Whelan and Stephen Roche kept Sion’s noses in front. Sion keeper Ian O’Regan was called into action when he produced a super save but a Tallow player was on hand to knock the rebound to the back of the net. Sion regained the lead through points from Kenny Stafford, Eoin McGrath and both Martin O’Neills to lead at half time by 2 points. After the break Martin O’Neill exchanged points with Tallow and a Sean Ryan goal gave Sion a 6 point cushion heading into the last 10 minutes of the second half. A wonderful sideline point from the western side and a converted free reduced that margin. Again the Sion defence failed to deal with clearance and the ball fell to an unmarked Tallow forward who netted the ball in the top right hand corner giving “Iggy” no chance at all. Sean Ryan pulled a point back for Sion to leave 2 between the sides going into the last 2 minutes of the game. Tallow’s county star Thomas Ryan’s pace was no match for the Sion defence as he sliced through to hand the ball out to an unmarked forward to give the Tallow men the lead with a well taken goal and as they celebrated, Sion were quickly on the attack as the army man Owen Whelan riffled over his third point of the game and more importantly tie the game up, to deny Tallow a famous victory against the monastery. Final score Mount Sion 1-20 to Tallow 3-14.Camogie
The first official AGM of the Mount Sion Camogie Club took place last Tuesday night. There were a great number of girls in attendance and there was a great positive attitude towards the setting up of a much needed camogie club. The following have been elected as main officers: Chairperson – Seamus Ryan; Vice-Chairperson – Lindsay Grace; Secretary – Tina Gleeson; PRO – Owen Sauvage; Treasurer – Peter Walsh; Registrar – Paul Fanning. We now have in place an adult team training every Tuesday and Thursday nights. If you would like to get involved come along or contact me (Savo) for more information on 087-9706387. The more girls we get up the better. Also we hope to kick off a juvenile club by hosting the “Mum & Me” event, (Please see below for more details). You can now also keep an eye on the new website page, located under the teams tab on www.mountsiongaa.ie for all the latest Camogie news and games.
Mum & Me
Mount Sion GAA Club along with interested people have now started a Camogie Club. One of the first initiatives will involve a new idea called “Mum and Me”. This program will run for 6 Weeks on Wednesdays at 6.30pm beginning on the 22nd June. We have promoted this in the local girls Schools. I would ask you, that if you have a daughter/niece/friends interested in trying Camogie for the first time, or in taking it up again, to bring them along and consider joining in yourself. The program is not just aimed at Mums, but the Dads can join in as well.Under 11
The Under 11 travelled to Tramore at the Sea-side venue last Friday night. The lads worked tirelessly all over the field and we got some great scores and came out winners. Final score Mount Sion 5-6 to Tramore 1-2. Panel on the night was Charlie Costello, Jack Meaney, Eoghan Power, Bill Wall, Darragh Quinn, Jordan Roche, Stephen Flynn, Thomas Mc Lawrence, Ryan O’Connor, Shaun Brophy, Oisin Daly, Luke O’Brien, Alan Kirwan and Josh Fanning. Well done to all.Under 4, 5 & 6s
These little lads are the youngest hurlers in the club and they travelled to Ferrybank on Saturday morning to play mini blitz games. It’s great to see how all the training they are doing each Saturday morning is coming good as they won many of their games. Well done to all including their mentors.Intermediate
The Intermediates played Ferrybank in Cleaboy last Thursday night. After a great performance against Ballydurn last weekend, this was a total different game where we were unable to match Ferrybank all around the field. We missed a number of opportunities in the opening half and our backs were under serious pressure right throughout the game. Final score line Mount Sion 0-4 to Ballydurn 4-11.Best of Luck
Best of luck to the Waterford Minors who play Limerick in the Munster Semi-Final on Saturday at 7:30pm in Walsh Park, especially Stephen O’Neill and Shane Forristal.
