Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Senior Hurling Championship
It was quarter final time with Mount Sion paired against Ballyduff Upper in Fraher Field last Saturday evening. Ballyduff raced into an early lead with three points, all from play. Ken McGrath settled Mount Sion into the game with a wonderful over head strike from well out the field to get Sion’s first point. His brother Eoin added Sion’s second moments later. Ballyduff hit two more points with Sean Ryan and Ian Galgey cancelling them points out. Martin O’Neill hit two long range frees and Kenny Stafford got Sion into the lead but it didn’t last long with Ballyduff’s Brendan Hannon pointing three frees. Again Stafford, O’Neill and Galgey pointed which gave Sion a narrow one point lead at half time. Again Ballyduff started the half well with two points. Martin O’Neill converted a free with Upper hitting back with three unanswered points. Eoin McGrath got Sion’s second score of the game nineteen minutes into the second half. A great save by Adrian Power in the Upper goal was produced after a wonderful strike from Ian Galgey but substitute Martin F. O’Neill was quickest to the break and finished the ball to the back of the net. Ballyduff went point for point with Ian Galgey and Martin O’Neil. Sion were now one point up and with time up on the clock but referee judged Eoin McGrath to have thrown the ball and Ballyduff pointed from the resulting free to send the game to extra time. Final score Mount Sion 1-14 to Ballyduff Upper 0-17. Sion opted to play against the wind in the first half of the ten minutes of extra time. Ballyduff scored 4 points with Sion failing to score. Ian O’Regan was called into action and produced a top quality save to keep his clean sheet. With a lot to do in the second period, Sion pointed through Martin F. O’Neill but Ballyduff cancelled it out with a point of their own. The other Martin O’Neill converted a 65 with Brian Cusack adding a point seconds later. With a last gasp chance Adrian Power saved a shot from Eoin McGrath with O’Neill missing the resulting 65. Time ran out with Ballyduff up by two points. Final score Mount Sion 1-17 to Ballyduff Upper 0-22. Hard luck lads.Best of Luck
