Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Under 14 Feile
Our Under 14s recorded a great victory in the Eastern Semi-Final of the Feile last Wednesday night in Cleaboy against Ballygunner. It took twelve minutes for the first score to come, Edward Cullen broke through the Gunner’s defence and he made no mistake striking to the net. Ballygunner pulled a point back but Sion went in the happier side at half time, after playing the better hurling in the first half. Jonathan Flynn pointed early in the second half from a free. Young Louie Halligan made up for his miss in the opening half and drove over to send Sion four points clear. Evan McGrath also pointed as true to Ballygunner style didn’t give in and clawed back three points, but Sion much deserved the win and their place in the Eastern Feile Final. Final score from Cleaboy, Cnoc Síon 1-3 to Ballygunner 0-4. Well done lads, next up in the Final is De La Salle on Wednesday 1st May at 6:30pm in Walsh Park. I’d appeal to all our supporters to give these young lads all your support on Wednesday. Best of luck.Sargent Cup League
The second round of the Sargent Cup League took place last Sunday morning in Mount Sion against Dungarvan who fielded an almost full strength side. Dungarvan took advantage of two early mistakes and built up an early lead but Ian Power pulled a goal back to leave Sion trail by one goal. Dungarvan pointed a brace with the pick of the points a long range effort from County player Jamie Nagle from long distance. Michael Frisby pointed along with Anthony Kirwan but goal number three came for the visitors on the 19th minute. Three points from Gavin Carroll kept Sion in touch, we trailed by four points at half time. Dungarvan got the ball rolling in the second half with a point with Frisby, Carroll and newcomer Jordan Broaders reigning in the visitor’s lead. A point only separated the sides with thirteen minutes left on the clock. Again both sides swapped scores, but on the twenty-seventh minute the Sion goal was again breached, Broaders pointed as time ran out and a goal separated the sides. Final score Cnoc Síon 1-14 to Dungarvan 4-8.Next Weekend
The best of luck to our Senior and Intermediate hurlers who both play the opening rounds of their respective championships next weekend. Our Senior hurlers are in action on Friday night against Ballygunner in Walsh Park at 7pm. The Intermediates take on Portlaw in Kill on Saturday at 5pm. Best of luck to both teams and to all our teams playing championship next week.Junior Hurling Championship
Our Junior Hurlers suffered their second straight loss in championship against Roanmore, something which is unheard of for a number of years. A good opening fifteen minutes saw Sion lead by five points to two, thanks to some accurate shooting from Jamie O’Meara, Johnny Hayes and Pappy Bowe. But as games go, Roanmore swung the game in their advantage with several pointed frees. Sion went in at half time a point down. Both sides went point for point in the second half with Sion hitting the target through O’Meara. On the twentieth minute a free in around the Roanmore small square was guided to the net by Daniel Kelly. The game was level, but Johnny Hayes shot Sion in front, but it wasn’t for long, Roanmore pointed and O’Meara once again pointed Sion in the right direction. With a minute left on the clock, Sion were a point up. A quick sideline ball, in Roanmore territory was quickly swept up the field and Roanmore attacked with a goal. Two points followed with Kelly pulling back a point. A disappointing end, which sees us still chasing our first two points on the board. Final score from Walsh Park, Cnoc Síon 1-13 to Roanmore 1-16.Junior Football Championship
Our Junior Footballers were down to play Fenor last Saturday, but due to Fenor been unable to put out a team, Mount Sion received a walkover. We are now three wins from three and remain top of the group.
Under 16 Championship
Our Under 16s recorded another great win against St. Patricks in Mount Sion. A feast of goals in the opening half laid down a good foundation for another victory. Final score Cnoc Síon 6-7 to St. Patricks 4-8. Well done lads, keep up the great work.Deise Draw
