Mount Sion Gaa Club Notes
Intermediate Hurling Championship
The Quarter Finals of the Eastern Intermediate Championship took place last Sunday when we faced Ballyduff Lower in Walsh Park. Ballyduff opened the scoring within the first minute with a point. Michael Power levelled it before Ballyduff broke through for their first goal. This was followed up by a second when a mistake by Sion’s defence left too much space for the Lower forward to ghost in behind and knock the ball to the net. A pass from midfielder Niall O’Sullivan found Dermot O’Byrne and he raised a green flag to settle Sion down. Bomb Power opened his personal account with a pointed free. The combination of Barry Ryan, to O’Sullivan to Brian Cusack put Sion back to within a point of their opponents. Bomb again punished Lower from the placed ball. Richie Roche’s shot on goal, was deflected to O’Byrne and he sent the ball over to put Sion in the driving seat. But the lead didn’t last long with Ballyduff pointing and the Bomb again spot on from frees. Sion went in one point up at half time. Four minutes into the second half and Ballyduff hit the first score and Bomb replying twice to keep Sion’s noses in front. But again Ballyduff’s corner forward was deadly accurate and hammered home another goal. This gave them a bit of momentum and they got the next two points. Frisby lobbed a ball in around Ballyduff’s goal, the ball broke to the Bomb who made no mistake and rattled the back of the net. Roche and Michael Frisby both got their names in for a point and this brought us two points ahead. Sion were holding strong in the back line with Craig Sauvage, Shane Twomey, Shane & Barry Ryan and Aaron Coady showing some true leadership! Ballyduff then went score for score with the Bomb as the game entered the last minute of time, Cusack rifled over to give Sion a lead! But credit to Ballyduff they battled back to level the game and throw it into extra time of, two halves of ten minutes a side. Final score at normal time Cnoc Síon 2-12 to Ballyduff Lower 3-9. Michael Frisby put Sion ahead four minutes in with the Bomb deadly accurate again from the placed ball. Ballyduff failed to score in the opening half and they had a number of clear opportunities but Sion’s defence were excellent in their efforts and didn’t give their opponents an inch of space. In the second period of extra time, Niall O’Sullivan was fouled six minutes in and the Bomb hit Sion three points clear! He still needs some mentoring though as he missed a clear chance just at the death, but none the less. Sion showed some great heart and determination to edge out this great encounter and book a place in the Eastern Semi-Final. Well done lads. Final score Cnoc Síon 2-15 to Ballyduff Lower 3-9.Ladies Football Championship
